The University of Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, in collaboration with Claudiana Polo Universitario delle Professioni Sanitarie, is offering a new English-taught Medicine and Surgery program. This program is conducted at Claudiana, located in Bolzano, the capital of the South Tyrol region. Students enrolled in this program will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and a qualified faculty, benefiting from the experience of doctors and researchers from the A. Gemelli University Hospital and the clinical training opportunities provided by local facilities.
A Multidisciplinary Approach
The Università Cattolica’s 6-year single-cycle MD Medicine and Surgery degree provides a full integration of learning objectives from European and US curricula. This integration is achieved through a multidisciplinary approach. The program not only focuses on basic and clinical sciences but also emphasizes patient management, the legal responsibilities of the medical profession, and its ethical aspects.
Course Details
The program is based on an innovative curriculum that integrates the basic sciences, clinical sciences, and human sciences from the first years of study. This approach aims to develop an effective doctor-patient relationship. Practical experience is gained at the Central Hospital in Bolzano, as well as in other hospitals belonging to the hospital network in the South Tyrol region.
What sets this program apart is the teaching of Italian and German. Students will have the opportunity to learn both languages, enabling them to communicate easily with medical staff and patients. The language courses are mandatory for students whose native language is Italian or German, while students of other native languages must attend both Italian and German language courses.
Teaching Method
The Medicine and Surgery master’s degree program consists of a series of integrated courses, each focusing on specific areas of scientific skills and notions. The teaching in the program is characterized by horizontal and vertical integration of knowledge. It is based on a solid foundation in the pre-clinical area and uses a problem-based approach. Early contact with patients is emphasized, allowing students to acquire clinical skills and develop strong communication abilities.
The teaching method is highly integrated and flexible, constantly updated to provide students with a comprehensive and interdisciplinary perspective. This approach stimulates the acquisition of new competencies throughout the program.
Career Opportunities
Upon successfully completing an assessed internship, the state examination, and registering with the Medical Association of their local province, graduates of the Medicine and Surgery program are qualified to perform clinical care in Italy. They are also qualified to carry out surgery in various roles and pursue careers in clinical, health, and biomedical professional fields.
The program is designed for students who aspire to become qualified general practitioners. Graduates can further their studies in specialty training schools or pursue the three-year regional program of specific training in general medicine. Graduates from the English-taught program are eligible to participate in USMLE Steps 1 and 2, opening doors to post-graduate training, residencies, and similar programs in European or non-European Anglophone countries.
Non-Italian graduates from the international MD Medicine and Surgery program have the opportunity to attend Italian language courses essential for their integration into Italian society. Proficiency in the Italian language is particularly crucial for effective doctor-patient communication within the national health context. Knowledge of the Italian language also enhances access to specialty training schools within Italian universities.
